Dive Brief:

  • Payments company PayNearMe, which provides services for online gambling and sports betting apps, has expanded the number of ATMs that players can use to receive their winnings in cash, according to a Monday press release.
  • Santa Clara, California-based PayNearMe is partnering with NCR Atleos, a banking services company that provides ATM services, to allow players to collect their winnings without an ATM card.
  • Despite the declining use of physical currency and ATMs across the country, “cash remains an integral part of the player experience,” Atleos Chief Operating Officer Stuart Mackinnon said in a Monday press release.

Dive Insight:

Nearly half of mobile betting app users would play more often if they could collect their winnings the way they wanted, according to PayNearMe’s website. The payments platform allows users of gambling apps to cash out at ATMs without the use of a card, the release said.

PayNearMe’s ATM network has now been boosted to include those run by NCR Atleos. PayNearMe did not immediately respond to requests for information on how many ATMs were available to users before the deal. But according to Atleos’s website, that ATM services company operates about 280,000 ATMs globally.

Atlanta-based NCR Atleos is the product of a recent split by payments software and technology company NCR Corporation. NCR Atleos focuses on ATM services, while NCR Voyix focuses on retail, hospitality and digital banking operations.

And while ATMs may prove a convenient way for unbanked customers to receive their winnings, the total number of U.S. machines is in steady decline, according to data emailed to Payments Dive from research firm Euromonitor International. There were just under 452,000 machines in the U.S. in 2022, down 4% from a high of 470,000 in 2019.
